This time, we explored the inside of the Daxueshan Forest Recreation Area. We originally planned to catch the vibrant autumn foliage, but we arrived a bit too early – the reds hadn’t painted the scenery yet. Nevertheless, in the ever-changing natural vibe of Daxueshan, I think it’s a great spot to visit all year round. Whether it’s the burst of autumn colors or the charm of the other seasons, Daxueshan has something special to offer. Hopefully, this article gives you a better feel for the place!

Cloud seas are often visible

Starting from the foot of the mountain and heading upwards, when the altitude reaches a certain level, you can witness the breathtaking sea of clouds! Even if it’s not a designated viewpoint, you can still discover beautiful scenery

At the Dumb Mouth Scenic Platform, the view is quite expansive, offering a distant gaze at the surrounding mountains. Located within the Daxueshan Forest Recreation Area, it takes only about fifteen minutes to walk from the viewing platform parking lot, as far as I remember. The terrain is flat, making it suitable for visitors of all ages

At the end of this journey, we arrived at the Small Snow Mountain Tianchi within the forest recreation area, and the view from the Tianchi parking lot is also fantastic

Heading towards the Tianchi from the parking lot, most of the path is paved, so it lacks a bit of the outdoor hiking feel

We didn’t have to walk for long before reaching Tianchi. It turned out to be our last stop of the day. When we arrived, we were surprised to find that the water in Tianchi was green, initially expecting it to be a deep blue.

In the evening, the forest road was bathed in golden hues, with few vehicles around. We drove slowly, taking our time to appreciate the scenery.

Wildlife is visible everywhere

On the way to the forest recreation area, when I saw a group of people with big cameras, they were basically photographing ‘Lophura swinhoii.’ Personally, I went to this section around seven in the morning and took a few shots. However, all I captured were juveniles; I felt a bit disappointed not to have photographed an adult male bird.”

The Formosan Sambar Deer is also a common sight in Daxueshan. On that day, near the Tianchi parking lot, we encountered a chubby Sambar Deer that wasn’t too afraid of people. Compared to past experiences where they would bolt at the sight of us, this was quite lucky. However, it still got wary if we got too close, so we observed it from a distance, not wanting to disturb.
