Tainan Beimen Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields ,Gorgeous sunset sea view。

Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields

Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields in Beimen are ancient salt fields that are open to visitors for experiencing salt drying and salt harvesting. The sunset here often attracts a large number of photography enthusiasts. Moreover, during autumn, there is a magnificent scene with a large number of black-bellied plovers migrating through. Highly recommend coming for a visit!

Scenic Views of Salt Fields

I was initially drawn by these neatly arranged small salt piles. I believe many people who have visited here feel the same. It’s a popular spot along the coastal areas of Tainan. As a Tainan local, whenever I have free time, I come here to enjoy the sunset.

Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields

The salt drying ground here is made with brick-paved surfaces, known as brick-paved salt fields. In the lower part of the image below, you can clearly see that the texture is not ordinary soil. The major difference from earthen salt fields is that, during salt harvesting, earthen fields are prone to collecting mud, contaminating the salt. Therefore, ancient people used fragments of wine jars spread on the ground to obtain clean salt.

The salt field embankment here is constructed with brick, whereas the old-style salt fields didn’t have brick structures and were entirely made of soil. However, during heavy rain, they were prone to erosion and had difficulties with drainage. That’s why later salt fields adopted brick-paved embankments.

Izaijiao is open for visitors to experience salt field life!

There’s also a waterwheel in the field that you can go and step on.

Twilight is the busiest time here, and even on weekdays, there are a lot of people.

Salt Fields

The evening sky’s sunset, combined with the reflection in the water of the salt fields, is absolutely stunning. Because of this, you’ll often find many photographers setting up tripods to capture the beauty. While the photos may look empty, in reality, there are people all around!

I personally like to go to the back levee to watch the sunset over the oyster sheds before the sun fully sets. It’s really beautiful!

You can capture couples enjoying the sunset everywhere. This scene is my absolute favorite.

Chlidonias hybrida migrating

Every autumn, around mid-October to mid-November, is the migration season. During the evening, at the oyster sheds behind the salt fields, you can witness a massive number of Chlidonias hybrida . That’s why this period is the time I most frequently visit Izaijiao

The viewing spot is on the levee behind the salt fields. The white building in the upper left corner of the picture is just behind the levee.

Around four o’clock, people are already waiting on the levee for the return of the Chlidonias hybrida .

After five o’clock, you can see flocks of plovers, combined with the scenery of the oyster sheds at sunset! It’s really beautiful! During this season, the same spectacle unfolds every day, but the view lasts for less than half an hour, so you need to seize the moment.

I didn’t capture the video very clearly… please forgive me. Experiencing it in person is the best, after all. And, it’s a bit windy, so remember to wear a jacket.

Surrounding scenery

In front of the salt field parking lot, there’s a temple. Facing the temple, on the right side, you’ll see a school called ‘Izaijiao School.’ Before strolling through the salt fields after parking, you can take a walk here.

If you keep walking further, there’s a bird-watching platform with seats. You can sit there, and if you’re not afraid of the sun, it’s a nice place to relax.

In the autumn and winter seasons, behind the bird-watching platform, you can often observe water birds. The black beak in the picture is an introduced species, the ‘Egyptian Sacred Ibis,’ which has proliferated significantly in Taiwan.

At the lower end behind the bird-watching platform, there’s a small grove with red trees where you can find quite a few fiddler crabs and mudskippers.
